COHSASA goes beyond accreditation, offering quality improvement training, developing standards for governments and corporates, and helping monitor adverse events to enhance patient safety. We provide expert advisory and training services to elevate healthcare standards across Africa, ensuring institutions meet international accreditation benchmarks for safer, high-quality care.

Why it matters: Strengthening staff and systems is key to sustainable healthcare. With COHSASA’s guidance, your team gains the skills to implement effective quality improvement, driving excellence in patient care and system resilience.

Training programmesQI methodology

COHSASA can provide standalone training on quality improvement methods or deliver this as part of preparation for the accreditation programme. Empowering healthcare providers with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to deliver exceptional care is essential. By providing comprehensive training and resources, we enable healthcare workers to thrive and contribute to the movement for better healthcare.

Thereafter weekly coaching sessions are held with the team. These sessions focus on implementing quality improvement, developing policies, devising risk management systems and patient safety projects. The sessions are practical and interactive and address the specific needs of the participants in your facility to ensure that we share our knowledge and help build capacity.

At the end of the programme, participants can evaluate themselves using COHSASA standards, apply the learning from the training and embed quality improvement (QI) as a daily activity.

The individual elements of the programme can be presented as standalone modules, including quality improvement methods, risk management, incident reporting and management and policy and procedure development.

Help countries and authorities develop healthcare standards

COHSASA has experience of developing standards specifically to suit clients and the country that they live in. While the standards are based on the COHSASA standards, there are variations and differences which are included to ensure the standards are appropriate for the context in which they will be used.

Assist with the establishment of healthcare accreditation agencies

COHSASA has experience in assisting African health authorities and governments to establish accreditation bodies tailored to their country’s unique needs. The guidance aims to help governments avoid common pitfalls, drawing on COHSASA’s own experience in the field. This support ensures the creation of bodies that align with the principles and guidelines set by the International Society for Quality in Health Care External Evaluation Association (ISQuaEEA).

Additionally, COHSASA offers on-site knowledge transfer to visiting delegations from African countries that are in the process of setting up their own accreditation agencies and need guidance on how to achieve this.

Advisory Services for Healthcare Facility Commissioning

Although COHSASA does not directly oversee the physical infrastructure of healthcare facilities, it offers indirect guidance to architects and builders to ensure that new or renovated structures are constructed to meet the requirements of COHSASA’s accreditation standards. Many architects use COHSASA’s standards as a framework to design healthcare facilities that comply with quality and safety requirements. This proactive approach helps ensure that the built environment is conducive to achieving high quality care and supporting accreditation processes.
